difficulty level: 3/5 (challenging)
Time: 8:00 am to approx 2:00 pm

Discovered in 1989 by a local farmer who was hunting with his dogs, this cave has hundreds of pottery vessels and other untouched artifacts left behind by the Maya.
Che Chem Ha (Cave of Poisonwood Water) is often done as a substitute for the ATM Cave when that cave is closed due to high water levels.

The tour company will pick you up at Vanilla Hills Lodge and drive with you approx 16 miles into the Maya Mountains close to the Vaca Forest Reserve.

During a 45 minutes hike through a spectacular Jungle scenery, the tour guide will explain you the local fauna. You will reach the almost hidden entrance and once in the approx. 800ft long cave system you will see that it was used by the Maya for many centuries. Narrow passages wind past ceremonial pots, which were used for food storage and rituals. Short ladders enable you to climb up rock ledges until you reach the end of the cave where you’ll find a stelae – a large slab of stone, in a chamber with a high ceiling.

This tours takes about 6 hours and it is perfect to combine with the Maya Temple Xunantunich to make it a full day tour.
