Tikal is the ruin of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala. It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization.
Located in the area known as Peten, the Tikal National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
This site was one of the rival Mayan sites of Caracol in the Mountain Pine Ridge of Belize.

After a 20 minutes drive from Vanilla Hills Lodge, you will reach the Belize-Guatemala Border. There you will be assisted through all the stamping and fees will be paid by your guide.
Your guide will drive you for another 1.5 hours before arriving at Tikal National Park. On that ride you will pass beautiful locations such as Lake Peten Itza- one of Guatemala’s most popular spots, with views of the island of Flores- in the distance.
The highway into Tikal Park is filled with wildlife which you may be lucky enough to see.

Upon arrival at Tikal you will start with a 4 hour tour of this magnificent site. This expedition is meant to showcase the amazing ability of these ancient people in their architecture, irrigation water systems and their grand plazas. During the tour you will also have time to view wildlife such as howler monkeys, coatimundi and oscillated turkeys. Enjoy birding as you spy parrots, toucans and other birds among the trees.

After touring the site you will get lunch at a local restaurant.
