Description

A very unique way to explore part of the Cayo district is a scenic horseback ride to Xunantunich.

You will get picked up at the Lodge and after a 20 minutes drive you will arrive at the stables. After getting to know the horses, you will start your tour to one of the most impressing Maya Sites in the country.
The ride to Xunantunich is on a well-maintained trail through along the banks of the Mopan River. You will cross the river on an hand-cranked ferry, and then ride your horse up to the Maya Site.

Xunantunich (Maya for “Maiden of the Rock”) sits atop a hill overlooking the Mopan River and the Cayo District “El Castillo” (the Castle), the largest pyramid at 130 feet above the plaza, has carved friezes on the east and west sides. On top of the temple you will have a panoramic view of the Cayo District, nearby Guatemala and the Mountain Pine Ridge Area.
